I've worked in the early Ford/hot rod business, and can vouch for tenths tolerances being the norm. This was in volume production, circa 1930. After that it was optical ginders & diaformed wheels, split dies, etc & now these have almost completely disappeared. Wire eroding, punch type EDM & CNC milling have transformed tool & die work.
